Skills

I work with all cameras on every format, from gimbal to GoPro, HD to 4K, also as a certified drone operator. Working independently as cameraman/sound recordist is also part of my skillset. I have my own lenses, digital radio mic kit, lighting kit and various grip and rigging equipment (ranging from the Ronin-S stabilization system to tripods, portable slider and dolly). Underwater, macro, high-speed, telephoto, infrared and remote control are all skills I’ve mastered. I’ve also managed to build an archive of HD and 4K stock shots, mainly of wildlife and drone shots.

I am also proficient in editing (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro) and have considerable experience as a colorist, as well as basic skills in Adobe Photoshop and After Effects.

Passion

I love storytelling, particularly the crossover between people and nature. My own fascination and curiosity play an important part in visually translating a story to video. I like to research thoroughly beforehand and then let my instinct take over when and where possible on a shoot. I believe filming is a very social endeavor and depending on the project and/or the director, I’m convinced this leads to the most interesting collaborations and the best end result.
To me, the combination of visual storytelling, people and nature are an eternal motivation which sparks my enthusiasm again and again. It keeps me on my toes, in an effort not only to get the most out of myself but out of every project.

info
info
I have been working in the television industry since 1996, when I started internships as clapper loader and camera assistant on a drama and documentary series respectively. Graduating in 1997 from the School of Arts in Utrecht, I continued working as clapper loader and lighting assistant on television series, commercials and music videos. In 1998 I also obtained a Master of Arts Degree in European Media from the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom. From 1999 to 2002, I worked as focus puller on Dutch television features and series, filmed music videos and commercials and assisted established cameramen on various overseas documentaries. Since 2002, I’ve worked internationally as D.O.P./lighting cameraman on current affairs programs, commercials, music videos and corporate specials, (presenter-led and wildlife) documentaries and children’s television shows. As camera operator, I've also worked on multi-cam studio shoots including (live) music and sports (soccer) games.
Since 2008, I’ve worked on a wildlife film about wild dogs in Zimbabwe, filmed for UNICEF on their commercial campaigns (2009), for National Geographic Channel for the series ʻMega Structuresʼ (2010), spent 80 days on the Pacific Ocean for the filming of ʻOur Blue Canoe’ (2011) and travelled to Kazakhstan, Norway and Spitsbergen for a documentary series about the origin of staple foods (2012).

I’ve followed several courses in animal and bird behavior, which have contributed to my ability to better understand and therefore film wildlife. Together with my experience in the field, working with the many biologists and ecologists throughout the years, I feel confident reading most situations when it comes to the natural world.
From 2012 to 2017 I worked as creative producer/director/cameraman/editor for Dutch NGO Natuurmonumenten, responsible for all their audiovisual content. I continued freelancing on side projects as well.
At the start of 2018, I started freelancing fulltime once again, as cameraman for Nature Conservation Films ('Forest Hope' in Thailand and South Africa, an elephant documentary) as cameraman/second unit director for VARA’s Vroege Vogels (the Netherlands) as well as various other projects including Painted Dog Conservation (Zimbabwe), commercial shoots for Groen&Kool (Laren, the Netherlands).

In 2019, I was head of the camera department (DOP) for a cinema feature documentary about scientific research and conservation efforts on the Galapagos Islands. Together with a small team, I spent 80 days on 10 of the archipelago’s islands, filming not only these dedicated people but also 8 key species of animals in classic ‘Blue Chip’ wildlife documentary style. This film premiered at the Wildlife Film Festival Rotterdam on October 30th and then featured in cinemas around the Netherlands.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked on commissioned videos for my own production company EYESEALAND Visual Media. I typically cater to the clients’ needs from story to finished product and everything in between from filming to editing and post-production.

I also mastered drone operating by courses and practice, including European certifications.
