Zand boven is a dark comedy that takes place in and around a funeral home. Winning certificates is central to this society and is clearly reflected in this environment. Dirk, an inconspicuous funeral employee, leads a colorless existence next to his charismatic and award-winning colleague Jan. When Dirk is told by his doctor that he is dying, the pressure that others put on winning certificates suddenly strikes him even more. He still does not necessarily have to win one, but he does long for the recognition that comes with it.

In an attempt to win over his colleagues, Dirk is only laughed at. Then something snaps in him. He confronts Jan by hitting him with one of the certificates that shows Jan's shining smile. When Dirk dies, Jan comes to say goodbye in his own way — by making it clear that he has always been the winner. Yet, when we see the certificates again, Jan is standing on the last one with a black eye. Dirk has managed to leave a personal mark after all.

About the film:
When a reclusive funeral director hears that he has three weeks to live, he wants to say goodbye in silence, but is pushed by those around him to die successfully anyway.
